Message from the Chief – Smoke Detectors

August 30, 2024

The Fire Chief would like to share some Safety Tips regarding Smoke Detectors.

Smoke Detectors are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke detectors give you an early warning so you can get outside quickly.

  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke detectors in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area.
  • Install detectors on every level of the home including the basement.
  • It is best to use interconnected smoke detectors. When one smoke detector sounds they all sound.
  • Test all smoke detectors at least once a month. If they’re not working, change the batteries.
  • A smoke detector should be located on the ceiling or high on a wall.
  • Keep smoke detectors away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet from the stove or oven.
  • People who are hard of hearing can use special detectors. These detectors have strobe lights and bed shakers.
  • Replace all smoke detectors when they are 10 years old or earlier when specified by the manufacturer.

The Fire Chiefs and all Members of the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department would like to wish you a very relaxing Labor Day weekend.

With the opening of the 2023-2024 school year on September 9th, the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department would like to remind motorists to be extra careful when driving on Village streets.  As students end their summer vacations and return to school, drivers should be extra cautious in school areas.  Please remain alert and keep speeds at or below posted speed limits.  Watch for children getting on and off of school buses!
